If there’s one inevitable truth about college, it’s that there’s almost never enough time to get everything done. Between class, studying, work, and just enough sleep to survive–well, we can understand why over half of all college students struggle to find time to exercise every week. In light of that, here’s a few ways to get the exercise you need without having to set aside time for the gym:
- Always take the stairs. Seriously. It can burn up to seven times as many calories as standing in the elevator. Think of it as an exercise in repetition: every time there’s a staircase, take it. Especially if you live on the top floor of your dorm.
- Walk or run everywhere. Between classes, to lunch, to the library. Make it a point to generally move more. Even if there’s a study lounge in your department building, go to the library after class instead, especially if it’s all the way across campus.
- Curl your textbooks for bicep strength. Your fat biology or calculus books can be used for more than just reading. Turn those books into weights and bicep curl quietly during class. Do it on the regular and you’re on your way to becoming a steely-armed, pumped-up strength machine.
- Take at least one active class. Whether it’s yoga or The Art of Walking (which was a real class offered at Centre College), inserting a little movement into your scholarly lifestyle can only do you well.
- Challenge your roommate to regularly scheduled wrestling matches. Be bold, brazen, and relentless. Have a mind to stay in shape. Learn the bodylock, the fireman’s carry, and, of course, the fabled full nelson. Engage in dorm room domination and get your exercise on. Just be safe.
- Spend some of your leisure time in an active way. We know school is rough and you’re probably tired. But we promise: getting up, getting out, and getting active in your downtime will improve your mood, your health, and probably your work ethic. Instead of watching a movie, head to the university center and play ping pong.
- Build more snowmen. In fact, build a snow army all across campus.
